2-ingredient wellness shot recipe
The two ingredients we use in our wellness shot recipe are oranges and spirulina powder, these two ingredients are readily available to buy in most big supermarkets. Unless you can’t find organic spirulina powder in your local supermarket, you will definitely find it in health and wellbeing stores. Spirulina has lots of health benefits containing all of the amino acids that are crucial for our bodies to function well. It is also packed with vitamins, minerals, and active compounds with positive effects on our health and wellbeing.
This wellness shot has a sweet seaweedy flavour. It’s luscious with a minerally taste which is easily made to make a quick and healthy start your day. With only two ingredients to make this shot, it is very easy to make but try adding a little bit of lemon juice, lime juice, or a little bit of grated ginger you can put your own twist on it very easily.
Both spirulina and oranges are alkaline ingredients. Even though oranges are high in citric acid they are part of a food group that will alkalize our body. This is because when we metabolize or convert our food into energy there is a chemical reaction that leaves behind metabolic waste and this waste is either acidic, alkaline, or neutral. When the residue or ash is left behind whatever its Ph level is will affect our body’s acidity. The thought is that the more acidic you are the more susceptible you are to illness and disease. The more alkaline you are the more protected you are to potentially lower the risk of cancers and other acute illnesses.
How to make our wellness shot recipe with spirulina
Making this wellness shot recipe shot is incredibly easy. All you need is a citrus juicer (or a juicer if you have one) so that you can juice the oranges. Then you just mix the spirulina powder in using a spoon or a fork. Alternatively, and this is what we’ve done making this recipe, we used our high-speed blender to mix the two together. Saying that a spoon or a fork will do the job just fine.
The recipe is simple – two oranges and two teaspoons of spirulina powder which will make approximately 8-9 shots.
What is spirulina + health benefits
Spirulina is an easily produced non-toxic deep blue-green algae that you can find in most lakes. It can grow in extreme surroundings inhospitable to most other water-dwelling organisms. This algae is packed with protein content, in fact, over 60% is protein which makes it a richer source of protein than most vegetables. It’s also an excellent plant-based source of iron.
Despite being a very good source of plant-based protein and iron, spirulina is also high in nutrients, including B vitamins, beta-carotene, and vitamin E. Moreover. spirulina also contains antioxidants, minerals, chlorophyll, and phycocyanobilin. Benefits of eating spirulina include:
- Increased energy
- immune system boost
- Reduction in bad cholesterol levels
- Decrease in inflammation
- Reduction in liver fat
Spirulina and its defense against cancer
Nutrition can play a very important part in the body’s protection against cancer. A balanced diet is integral to how our immune system functions. The many nutrients in spirulina can help therapies to work more efficiently and ease side effects too. Vitamin C and beta carotene are also linked to helping the body at a cellular level to help against damage caused by oxidative stress which itself is linked to cancer and other degenerative diseases. zeaxanthin, phycocyanin, and enzymes such as superoxide dismutase that spirulina contains have also been comprehensively studied for their benefits in both the treatment and possible prevention of many cancers too.
Health benefits oranges
Oranges are a delicious fruit originating from the regions comprising Southern China, Northeast India, and Myanmar and the first mentions of it were around 300 BC. There are several different types of oranges to choose from, there are also a few types to choose from that come in sweet (C.sinensis) or bitter (C.aurantium) varieties.
The common orange is a sweet variety and one we would recommend for juicing. Bitter varieties include the Seville orange which is more commonly used for making marmalade or the Bergamot orange where the peel is used to flavour Earl Grey tea and for its use in perfumes. Other sweet oranges to use are blood oranges or mandarins to which varieties include satsumas, clementines, and tangerines.
Oranges play an important part of an everyday healthy lifestyle. Whether drinking orange juice, using the peel or eaten whole they are high in Vitamin C and have numerous health benefits. Oranges contain high amounts of Vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant that is needed for hundreds of metabolic reactions including the production of collagen which is a major structural protein in the body. It is this protein that is essential for the growth and repair of healthy skin, bones, teeth and reproduction. Vitamin C also regenerates other antioxidants such as Vitamin E and has numerous other benefits such as protecting cholesterol against oxidation. Oxidized cholesterol is associated with the hardening and furring up of arteries which can cause serious illness. Studies have also suggested that people with the highest intakes of Vitamin C are less likely to develop certain cancers.
